How Design Can Make or Break a Deal

At Deloitte, I frequently heard partners discuss the concept of “selling the vision” i.e. the power of a well-crafted vision/pitch and its impact on selling products or services that are still in a conceptual phase. While I caution against relying on polished presentation for non-existent products–otherwise known as “vaporware”–I argue that good design can elevate a fully functional product, ensuring it isn’t overlooked when a prospective buyer is comparing options. Through several case studies, I identify common pitfalls in product positioning, website design, and video advertisements to offer strategic advice on effectively aligning a product’s visual appeal with its true value.
